Is Brotato Primal Dread Worth It? Price & Reviews

Is the Brotato: Primal Dread DLC worth $3.99? Steam Mixed reviews, Jungle + Evolution content, Update 1.2 Item Sets, and who should wait.

11/4/2026 1.2.0.0 Primal Dread Wiki Last updated: 11/4/2026 4 min read

If you already play Brotato on PC and want the Jungle map plus Evolution, the DLC is worth the asking price at US$3.99 on Steam (checked 4 Nov 2026). Skip for now if you are console-only, need mods updated for 1.2 first, or will not buy while Steam reviews sit at Mixed.

What is included at the asking price?

Steam listed US$3.99 / £3.39 / €3.99 on 4 Nov 2026. You need the base game (Brotato on Steam, app 1942280).

The Primal Dread store page repeats:

  • Jungle map with 20 waves, new enemies, elites, and bosses
  • 10 characters, 17 weapons, 40 items
  • Evolution stat with Mecha and Mutation paths (comparison guide)
  • 3 pets, Fossil items, new music, new achievements (Steam-tracked separately from base achievements per launch post)

The launch essay once said “more than 30 new items” while the store bullet says 40 items—we follow the store count in tables and lists.

PC versions also launched on Epic Games Store and GOG per press coverage; check your storefront.

How good are Steam reviews right now?

Snapshot from Steam on 4 Nov 2026:

Review bucket Steam label
Overall Mixed, about 60% positive from roughly 500 reviews
Last 30 days Mixed, about 58% positive

That is softer than the base game’s historical Mostly Positive reputation. Recent negatives often mention day-one balance, mods conflicting after 1.2 (developers ask you to disable outdated mods), and co-op bugs—several got fixes in v1.2.0.1 soon after launch.

Is the gameplay addition big enough?

For veteran players, the hooks that matter:

  1. Jungle pacing with holes and flying enemies (map guide).
  2. Evolution as a run-long choice that changes your scaling and enemy kits (stat guide).
  3. Ten new characters; we cover Veteran, Time Shifter, and Poacher on dedicated pages, with unlock notes in unlock all characters.

If you only touch Brotato occasionally, decide whether one map plus Evolution beats spending the same money elsewhere. Content volume is high for the price; replay value still depends on Danger level, co-op, or achievements.

What about free Update 1.2—is that separate value?

Update 1.2.0.0 shipped free alongside the DLC on November 2, 2026. Even without buying Primal Dread, you get:

  • Item Sets — toggle entire DLC and free-update packages from character select (how to disable DLC)
  • Nightmare enemy nerfs on Crash Zone and related tweaks
  • Eight character buffs (Diver, Druid, Dwarf, Hiker, Farmer, Fisherman, Beastmaster, One Armed) plus shop and weapon QoL listed in the Update 1.2 announcement

Buying Primal Dread is not required to use Item Sets—but Item Sets is the cleanest way to turn off other expansions while testing Jungle only.

Who should wait instead of buying?

Consider waiting if:

  • You play on console or mobile only — official timing is early 2027 with no exact date (console release guide).
  • You rely on mods — disable mods first; read mods not working on 1.2 before you buy and hit a broken loadout screen.
  • You disliked Abyssal Terrors difficulty spikes and want proof Nightmare plus Jungle tuning feels fair—devs said they were reading feedback post-launch.
  • You want a finished wiki before you commit—enemy HP tables and Evolution path metas are still settling days in.

Who gets the most value on day one?

Buy now if you:

  • Main PC Steam co-op and want fresh achievements and music.
  • Like buildcraft enough to try Mecha weapon shops versus Mutation item variance.
  • Plan to dig into new weapons and character pages as we publish them.

What we don’t know yet

  • Long-term review trend after balance passes.
  • Whether Epic or GOG user scores diverge from Steam.
  • Console SKU pricing and dates beyond “early 2027.”

FAQ

How much does Brotato: Primal Dread cost?
Steam listed US$3.99, £3.39, and €3.99 on 4 Nov 2026—the same price tier as Abyssal Terrors. You must own the base Brotato game on PC; regional prices on other storefronts may differ.
What do you get in the Primal Dread DLC?
The Steam store page lists a 20-wave Jungle map, 10 characters, 17 weapons, 40 items, the Evolution stat (Mecha and Mutation), new music, new achievements, pets, and more. Free Update 1.2 adds Item Sets, Nightmare tweaks, and eight character buffs alongside the DLC launch.
Why are Steam reviews Mixed for Primal Dread?
As of 4 Nov 2026, Steam shows Mixed user reviews—about 60% positive overall from roughly 500 reviews, and about 58% positive in the last 30 days. Launch-window balance, mods breaking on 1.2, and co-op edge cases show up often in recent negatives; scores can shift as patches land.
Should console players buy Primal Dread on PC now?
Official messaging targets console and mobile ports in early 2027 without a firm date. If you only play on Switch or phone, buying the PC DLC now does not transfer—use the console release date guide and wait for your platform.
Can you try Primal Dread without other DLC?
Update 1.2’s Item Set menu lets you toggle extension content from character select—including turning other DLC off while keeping Primal Dread on. The Item Sets guide walks through the menu.
